LARGE INNER-CITY EXCAVATION PIT

Extension of the Axel-Springer publishing house

Between 2016 and 2019, between Schützenstraße and Zimmerstraße, Jerusalemer and Lindenstraße in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg, another publishing house for up to 3,500 employees was built – in the immediate vicinity of the existing high-rise publishing houses, in the heart of the former publishing district and along the former Berlin Wall (the former border runs through the middle of the building).

Together with Züblin Spezialtiefbau BTB excavated an 80,000 m³ excavation pit for the publishing house. This very large excavation pit in the middle of a street rectangle was particularly challenging from a logistics perspective. Because it was in the middle of the city with no alternative areas for construction machinery and trucks, the excavation and removal of the soil had to be coordinated with great precision. Due to the lack of space, precise coordination with other contractors was imperative.

Despite all of these hurdles, the new building was completed on time in 2019 with the first employees moving in to the building in spring 2020.
