EXTENSIVE SHAFT WORK / VERY DEEP UNDERWATER EXCAVATION

U-Bahn line (subway) between the Bundestag and the Brandenburg Gate

From 1995 to 2006 the 1.8 km „Kanzler-U-Bahn“ U55 was built between the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Central Station. After years of being a “short line”, it is to be connected to the completely new U5 at the end of 2020.

The tunnel tubes for the subway were drilled by a pipe-jacking machine called “Bärlinde”. In order for the material removed by it to be transported upwards and removed, BTB was commissioned to dig the appropriate shafts.

In addition, we built an excavation shaft 16 meters below the groundwater through a very deep underwater excavation in the sheet pile casing.

BTB was also responsible for the entire removal of earth that was brought up to the surface on a conveyor belt.

The pipe-jacking machine „Bärlinde“ worked using the overpressure method. This meant that our employees who were involved in the installation of the tunnel segments and the tunnel linings had to go through a personnel air lock for pressure equalization.
